Commands are shown in fixed width font. An example is shown below.

Commands for GNU/Linux that are shown with a $ prompt are to be executed as normal user. Commands for GNU/Linux that are shown with the # prompt generally require root privileges to be executed. Ubuntu users will have to prefix the command with sudo. Other distribution users can get access to a root shell using the su command.
